This coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli.
Pascoli is one of the most popular Italian poets – his works being among the standard fare for school children.
He had a sad youth, his father being murdered when he was twelve and his mother as well as a sister and two brothers dying not long thereafter. As a student he became involved with political radicals and ended up for a while in prison.
He then turned to literature. He dealt with patriotic and historical themes and received international recognition.
The motif shows a portrait of Pascoli, looking to the right. At the bottom of the inner circle is a bold inscription “G. PASCOLI”, running from eight to four o’clock. The dates of Pascoli’s death and the yeas of issue appear between nine and ten o’clock and between two and three o’clock respectively.
The country designation, an I superimposed on an R is at three o’clock and the mint mark is at nine o’clock. Finally the initials “M.C.C.” of the designer appear at eight o’clock.
