This coin commemorates the the 150th Birthday of Maria Montessori.

She was an Italian pedagogue, philosopher and doctor and after her are named the Montessori schools now established in many parts of the world.

She died in Amsterdam, now home to the non governmental organization AMI - Association Montessori Internationale.

The coin motif is a portrait of Montessori within a square that extnds into the outer (silver) ring of the coin. A column to the right of the portrait shows three of the teaching tools she used.

At the top of the inner circle , at twelve o'clock is her date of birth - 1870.Down the left side of the square is inscription "Maria" and on the bottom of the square the inscription "Montessori".

At three o'clock is the the national mark "RI" and at the bottom corners of the square we see two insignia - bottom left the Mint Mark "R" and right the mark"LDS" of the designer Luciana De Simoni.
