This is the fourth coin of the seven-part series "Prehistoric Sites of Malta".
Themistocles Żammit a Maltese archaeologist) began excavating this Neolithic megalithic complex in Mġarr in 1923. It has since been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta.
The coin motif shows the entrance to the complex with three broad steps in front. The whole complex is believed to have been built around 3600-3200 B.C. or almost 6,000 years ago! To the left and right of the entrance are further ruins of the temple.
In the upper left quarter of the inner circle is the inscription "TA 'ĦAĠRAT TEMPLES 3600-3000 B.C.
Near the bottom, between six and seven o'clock,we see "MALTA 2019".
The coin, minted at the Monnaie de Paris, was designed by Noel Galea Bason. His initials "NGB" appear on the edge of the inner circle at four o'clock.
