This coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the death of Sandro Botticelli.
Sandro Botticelli was an important Italian painter and sculptor of the early Renaissance period.
In the inner circle is a small detail of Botticelli’s painting “Primavera” (Spring). The head of the lady shown represents pleasure – she is one of the three dancing graces. “Primavera” is one of best known and most often reproduced works of the period. And it portrays the awakening of the with the birth of a new spring.
I strongly recommend that you click on this link and have a look at this marvelous painting.
On the edge of the inner circle, eight to ten o’clock, is the name of the issuing country. The year of issue appears at the top,the mint mark “R” at around nine o’clock and the initial of the engraver at four o’clock.
This is I believe the most attractive Commemorative Coin minted.
